Supporting joyful math as a human activity for everyone from children to research mathematicians.

We help educators, researchers, and community leaders open up real mathematical experiences, in classrooms and well beyond.

What do we mean by joyful math?

School mathematics too often comes down to prescribed steps and formulas. Mathematics as researchers practice it looks very different, and everyone deserves a chance to experience it.

Math as a list of steps

  • computation
  • rote memorization
  • speed
  • individual success or failure

Math as mathematicians do it

  • curiosity
  • investigation
  • debate
  • discovery, together

Two communities we help grow

Our work centers on two national communities: the people who lead Math Circles, and the people who create and use free open educational resources.

Math Circles

For students, and for teachers

Math Circles are communities of students or teachers who meet regularly to solve problems together. Through exploration, discovery, and inquiry, participants work with significant mathematics and practice the habits of mind that mathematicians use every day.

  • Student circles
  • Teachers’ circles

Accessible, interactive open educational resources

For authors, teachers, and students

Textbook costs, inaccessible formats, and static pages all put roadblocks in front of students. We support free open resources in mathematics, especially those made with PreTeXt, an open-source authoring and publishing system. PreTeXt material works with screen-reading software and converts, for free, to embossable Braille. We help its authors collaborate and share their work.

  • Interactive
  • Screen-reader friendly
  • Braille-ready

Building bridges

Students benefit most from what we do, but we work mainly with the people who make joyful math happen: educators, researchers, resource developers, and community leaders who create and sustain their own programs. Across all of it, we build lasting collaborations that cross the usual boundaries.
